Tata Steel is committed to reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from 2.2 to 1.8 tonnes for every tonne of steel produced by 2012, in
a bid to contribute to climate change initiatives.
The company’s initiative is part of a industry move spearheaded by World Steel Association (WSA). It would include emissions across the Tata Steel group which also includes, Tata Steel operations in India and Corus group in Europe.
"We have set a target of bringing down emissions to 1.8 tonnes per tonne of steel produced by 2012. In every industry that uses carbon as fuel, carbon dioxide emissions are fairly large,” H M Nerurkar, managing director, Tata Steel said. He was speaking at National Conference on Leadership organized by CII-Suresh Neotia Center of Excellence.
"By 2020, we hope to reduce CO2 emissions to 1.5 tonne per tonne of steel produced," he added.
However, the steel industry is still grappling for answers on how to achieve this target. While there are answers for cutting down emissions up to 1.7 tonne for each tonne of steel, we do not yet have answers for how to go bring down from 1.7 tonne to 1.5 tonne, MR Nerurkar said.
To achive this objective, the global steel industry has taken up a dedicated project --Ultra light carbon dioxide (Ulcos). It aims to lessen emissions, capture and store it and finally to pump it in natural gas fields a later stage.
Come January, consumers should be ready to face a hike in steel prices. While state owned Sail has said it may have to increase prices next month, Tata Steel has hinted it may also raise prices in January 2010.
“What goes down has to come up. Prices were reduced last quarter so it has to go up in the next quarter,” Tata Steel managing director, H M Nerurkar said. |
